Grants for Library Projects

The Friends of Kentucky Libraries has initiated two grant programs to assist Friends Chapters with some of the expenses of advocating for their local libraries.

Reimbursement Grants to assist with Nonprofit Application Filing Fees - FKL encourages all Friends chapter members to incorporate as nonprofit organizations and obtain federal tax-exempt status. We realize that the filing fees and other costs associated with applying for this status can be a burden. To that end, we award non-competitive grants of $400 to each chapter that has been awarded tax-exempt status.

Chapters, or their library's board of trustees, must be members of FKL. (A membership form may be submitted along with the grant application.) Grant applications must be submitted no later than six months after the chapter receives official notification from the IRS. To apply, please complete the
grant application
and mail to FKL*.

Sister Library Grants - Kentucky is the first state in the country to establish a program that pairs in-state public libraries with one another in order to strengthen library services across the Commonwealth. Kentucky libraries have an opportunity to share resources, especially staff expertise, via a structured, goal-oriented approach. Libraries with unmet needs have a unique avenue open to them for achieving plans that otherwise may fall by the wayside.

The Friends of Kentucky Libraries is proud to support this effort to strengthen Kentucky's public libraries by offering a grant of $400 each year to a Sister Library partnership. The Sister Library Grants are open to any partnership in which one of the sister libraries has a Friends chapter that is a member of FKL or one library’s board of trustees holds a current membership.

Each partnership will use the grant funds to aid the smaller library in covering expenses associated with exchange visits between staff. To apply for a grant, please complete the Sister Library Grant application and mail to FKL, PO Box 537, Frankfort, KY 40602-0537.
